Guarnaschelli is the child of cookbook editor Maria Guarnaschelli and John Guarnaschelli. She graduated from Barnard College in 1991 with an education in art history. The year she graduated, she worked the minimum wage at a restaurant called an American Place for one year. Guarnaschelli began her career in the culinary field through helping her mother make a number of dishes and writing the books. Guarnaschelli started her career working in the kitchen of Larry Forgione. Her son Marc Forgione was the Iron Chef. Guarnaschelli continued to work at various restaurants throughout France and Los Angeles. Guy Savoy manages La Butte Chaillot. Prior to joining Butter the restaurant, she served as an executive chef in the Patina restaurant, owned by Daniel Boulud and at Joachim Splichal's Patina. Before its closure She was also the executive chef of The Darby. She chaired the Museum of Food and Drink's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli wrote her first cookbook in the year 2013. "Old-School Comfort Food": The Way I Learned to Cook" mixes autobiographical details with some of her favorite dishes of her professional career which she modified for her family home.
