Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a public speaker. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian-American blogger and media critic with awards to show for her work. She is an activist blogger. Feminist Frequency is an educational and non-profit site that examines female representations in narratives from popular culture. Dispelling stereotypes of women is her main focus. But, she also wants to highlight problems like discrimination and harassment of women on the internet. A graduate in politics and sociology from York University Sarkeesian is also an extremely sought-after public speaker and she has delivered keynote speeches at TEDxWomen's Women XOXO Festival as well as the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. She was interested in the gender issue and feminist movements since an early age. In 2009, when she was still at the university level, she launched the website Feminist Frequency. She had a plan to launch a web series examining gender representation within video games, and was herself the victim for an online harassment campaign. But the harassment did not deter her. The experience only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminist movements, she has been an award winner. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women in pop-culture and the narratives that surround them.
